Description

This is the story of a landmark RSPB project to restore over 3,000 hectares of the Lake District, from the tiniest wildflowers up to majestic golden eagles.

In 2015, England's last and loneliest golden eagle died, its body lost in an unmarked spot among the fells of the Lake District. The habitat could no longer support it. It was a tragic day for the nation's wildlife, but the fight to turn back the clock and restore the landscape, from skyline to skyline, had already begun.
Amid sometimes fierce local opposition, ecologist and farmer Lee Schofield had embarked on a decade-long effort to make space for nature where sheep had long ago grazed away the wildflowers, taking inspiration from the fjords of Norway and the beautifully preserved meadows of the Alps. The challenge in Haweswater was harder still, as they knew the project would only succeed if they could prove it was possible to find a balance between traditional hill farming and conservation on the same land.
The project took Schofield beyond the denuded pastures to seek out ancient wonders clinging on at the edges, from the secret location of the country's rarest mountain flower to the lost meanders in the local river. Because if we want the golden eagles to return, we have to take care of the waterways, the flowers, the insects and the mammals. Indeed, if we are to save our wildlife at all, we must first recognise that all of it is dependent on all of the rest - even us.
